ESL - Introductory 1
|
This course is designed to prepare recent immigrants or others who do not use English on their own to perform job and life tasks successfully. The course focuses on the needs of students to find information, make themselves understood in speech and writing, and learn the structures used in a variety of work and social situations in the United States.
At the end of ESL Introductory 1, students will have learned how:
- to recognize, pronounce, and write the alphabet, numbers, dates, times and money
- to respond to simple directions and personal questions and express basic needs and wants
- to read basic sight words, labels, warnings and signs
- to write simple statements and words from memory and copy information onto a simple form
- to use a computer with supervision
Students will demonstrate the following competencies in the context of work, family and citizenship:
- Recognize initial consonant sounds and the relationship between sounds and letters
- Recognize frequently used words, phrases, body language and one-step directions
- Respond appropriately to basic personal questions
- Pronounce most consonants and short and long vowels sounds
- Express basic needs or wants
- Recognize basic words in print, labels, warnings, and emergency signs
- Read and say the alphabet, numbers, dates, digital clock time, coins and currency
- Write upper and lower case letters and numbers and copy symbols
- Copy information onto a simple form
- Write simple statements and words from memory with proper size, punctuation, and spacing
- Use basic computer software with supervision

Student will advance to the next level of ESL Introductory 2, upon successful demonstration of competence in 75% of the performance outcomes with and 80% mastery as documented on their competency checklists. Most students require up to three times to complete this level.
