ESL - Introductory 2
|
The course includes a variety of interesting and innovative topics that encourage students to express their feelings, ideas, and opinions. In this course, students discuss a variety of topics such as relationships, jobs, sports and games, travel and transportation, the environment, arts and entertainment, and humor.
At the end of ESL Introductory 2, students will have learned how:
- to respond to simple requests, rules and regulations and follow multi-step directions
- to conduct simple conversations, express needs and wants, and describe objects and activities using statements, questions, and nonverbal behavior
- to pronounce consonants, blends, and vowels
- to read simple statements and questions, schedules, maps, simple directions, signs, warning labels, times and dates
- to write three or four related sentences using words from memory
- to fill out personal information forms
- to establish own learning goals
- to use simple computer programs
At the end of this level the student will demonstrate the following competencies in the context of work, family and citizenship:
- Understand simple sentences spoken slowly
- Differentiate statements from questions
- Use sentences and nonverbal behaviors to express needs and wants
- Ask and respond to questions and requests
- Understandably pronounce consonants, vowels, and diphthongs
- Use basic vocabulary to describe familiar objects and activities
- Read and write simple statements and questions
- Use sound-symbol relationships to read words and phrases
- Read simple notes, messages, schedules, signs and warning labels
- Find times and dates in printed materials
- Sort items alphabetically and numerically
- Fill out personal information forms
- Write from dictation one-syllable words with regular spellings
- Write three or four related sentences
- Use appropriate end punctuation
- Write frequently used word from memory
- Establish own learning goals
- Perform tasks using a computer

Student will advance to the next level of ESL Intermediate 1 upon successful demonstration of competence in 75% of the performance outcomes with 80% mastery as documented on their competency checklists. Most students require up to three times to complete this level.
